Straight to the Krankenhaus

As you may have gathered by now, I made it back from Mexico towards the end of May about the same time that my blog posts abruptly stopped. I always try to write an epilog at the end of my trips, but somehow home life takes over and the blogging just fades to black on its own. So after a brief two-month stop back home, a few filmmaking gigs and way too much time in front of the TV watching the Tour de France, I am back on the road again, this time for a month in Europe. Barb, Jereme and Zoe headed over a few days ago and I followed after finishing crewing a short film called 'Warnings from the Bathtub', an actual paying gig that was also fun.

The plan was to go to Frankfurt, pick up the rest of the family, then full speed ahead on the autobahn to Berlin, stay for a couple of weeks, meet up with various friends and get to know the place a little. But not so fast. Shortly before heading over the pond, I found out that Jereme crashed on a mountain bike ride (after racing a dozen or so bike races this spring, without incident, that were way faster, more dangerous and crash-filled), landing him in a local klinik in the outskirts of Frankfurt to get a gash in his left arm cleaned and stitched up. The doctors ordered an overnight stay for observation, which has now turned into several days after surgery was required to clean things up and keep infection at bay. Fortunately, we have a place to stay nearby at Barb's sister's house and Jereme's cousins also live nearby. So, I got off the plane and went straight to the krankenhaus to visit Jereme who was in good spirits, despite being pretty bummed at being stuck in the hospital while he's supposed to be enjoying a vacation. On the positive side, he's getting some good German lessons from the nurses and cousin Krista brought over some fine apfelstrudel tonight. I think his cousin David snuck a beer in the other day, but it's not the same as visiting a local brauhaus.
